The New Jersey Adoption Process

The process starts with the filing of an adoption petition. In most private and relative adoption cases, an approved agency must complete an adoption investigation. A preliminary hearing is usually scheduled within 2-3 months of the filing of the complaint, at which time the parental rights of one or both birth parents will be terminated, and the court determines if the child is fit for adoption and that the adoptive parents are fit. The final hearing is 6 months after the preliminary hearing after the supervisory visits are completed by the approved agency.

When representing adoptive parents, our attorneys seek to complete the process in a timely, efficient and cost-effective manner. We can prepare and file all necessary paperwork, help you prepare for interviews or home visits by agency personnel, and represent you in court.

Contested Adoptions

A biological parent who has custodial rights must relinquish his or her parental rights, either voluntarily or court order. We represent both biological and adoptive parents in contested adoption cases.

Our attorneys are experienced trial advocates with a record of success in family law litigation. We will vigorously represent you, working hard to protect your rights and achieve your goals.
